REGIONAL — “Thank you for visiting our pleasant little town,” reads the sign on the way out of Portsmouth. With its pretty houses, quaint downtown area and friendly residents, “pleasant” is an accurate description of the town of approximately 200. When a tornado paid a visit July 8, 1940, however, the storm left the community looking not so pleasant.

The National Weather Service says a tornado struck the suburban Philadelphia city of Chester during Sunday’s storm. Forecasters say the EF-0 tornado with maximum winds of 75 mph touched down at 3:45 p.m. Sunday and traveled about three-tenths of a mile.
